Throughout the study, researchers from the Ecology Center looked at more than 200, 2011 and 2012 vehicle models for various chemicals. Who knew that the “new car smell” that everyone has grown to love could actually be bad for you? The Ecology Center found that vehicle interior ratings are making a step in the right direction, but aren’t where they would like them to be.

Consider the fact that the “average American” spends roughly 1.5 hours in their car a day. Research Director at the Ecology Center, Jeff Gearhart stated that, “these chemicals are not regulated, so car buyers have no way of knowing what dangers they face.”

Inside the released details of the 2013 Honda Accord Plug-In Hybrid

One of Honda’s staple models, the Honda Accord, is turning 36 this year and Honda will celebrate by bringing to market the all-new ninth generation Accord. At the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) earlier in the year, Honda not only presented the 2013 Accord Coupe concept but also released details about their brand new 2013 Honda Accord Plug-In Hybrid.

The 9 Gen 2013 redesign is part of Honda’s makeover of the Accord line. The new 2013 Accords will feature a stylish exterior revamp and a new, much more efficient engine and transmission.

We don’t know much details about the full line redesign yet, but we do know that the Accord Plug-In Hybrid will be available later this year, probably around winter. It will consist of a two-motor system powered by a 2.0-liter, i-VET inline four-cylinder, Atkinson cycle engine paired to a 120 kW electric motor powered by a 6kW lithium-ion battery. The powertrain will run through an electric Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).

The Plug-In Hybrid Accord will be able to employ a direct-drive mode, where only the engine drives the front wheels, for more efficient cruising while at high speeds. The two-motor hybrid system maximizes efficiency and fuel economy by continuously moving through three modes: ell-electric, gasoline-electric, and direct-drive. Regarding recharging time for the battery, we are looking at less than four hours with a 120-volt outlet and less than an hour and a half for a 240-volt charger.

Additionally, the 2013 Accord plug-in will possess some of the best features out there and a few that we’re starting to see among other Honda vehicles. The Accord will use cameras mounted on the rear and side windows with a lane departure warning system, blind spot monitoring, and forward-crash warning technology to detect and warn of collisions. Furthermore, it will also come standard with Pandora integration, SMS text messaging system and Bluetooth connectivity.

2013 Honda Accord Coupe Concept Introduced

The 2013 Honda Accord Coupe Concept was revealed at the 2012 North American International Auto Show and has a lot of Honda fans enthusiastic with the new generation of the Honda Accord.

American Honda’s Executive VP of Sales, John Mendel, praised the new 2013 Accord Coupe Concept saying that, “Marking the 30th anniversary of U.S. production, this new ninth-generation Accord will raise the bar again through a tour de force of new Honda powertrain and safety technologies, geared to ensure that Honda and the Accord continue to lead in fuel economy, safety and fun-to-drive performance.”

As of recent, competitors of the Accord in their segment have been equipping more fuel efficient engines to meet evolving consumer preferences. The Honda Accord has done that too, but still has the 2.4L four-cylinder engine standard. It has some serious zip to it generating 181 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. For those who still want more power, don’t fret, the 2013 Accord will come with a 3.5L V6 option. Also of note, for the first time in Accord history, drivers will get to experience a six-speed manual transmission, which will aid in bolstering efficiency itself.

Another first for the Accord, that will be present for the sedan model only, is the option for a plug-in hybrid powertrain. This limited powertrain is features a 2.0L i-VTEC Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder and a 120 kW electric motor, which is fixed to a six kW/hr lithium-ion battery. Running on the Hybrid powertrain alone, the 2013 Accord Plug-In Hybrid can travel up to 10-15 miles with a top speed of 62 miles per hour. Not bad for a back up powertrain! Expect more details to be released once we get closer to the release date later this year.

Early 2012, Consumer Reports, the independent product-testing organization, unveiled its list of best value cars. The 2012 Honda Fit kept its top position as the Best Value Small Car and Best New-Car Overall Value. The nationally recognized organization analyzed over 200 different 2012 vehicle models in 11 different vehicle segments.

Consumer Reports calculates value scores based on three key data points: performance, reliability and cost of ownership. Performance and reliability are determined on road-test scores and its own predicted-reliability. Additionally, they base the cost of ownership on the five-year cost of owning the vehicle, which predicts costs in depreciation, sales tax, maintenance/repair, fuel consumption, loan interests, and insurance. The better a car’s performance is on the road-test and reliability ratings, and the less it costs to own over time, the better the car’s value.

The automotive editor for Consumer Reports, Rik Paul says that “A low price doesn’t necessarily make a car a good value. A cheap vehicle can wind up costing you more money over time or can be disappointing down the road. We think real value is what you get for your money.”

Honda set for a big 2012

With the not-so-welcomed introduction of the re-designed 2012 Civic, you can be sure that Honda is be back strong in 2012. The car manufacturer is set to release an updated Civic model alongisde a brand-new 2013 Honda CR-V crossover and also a 2013 Honda Accord. You can expect a early releases in 2012 for all of these models except for the 2013 Accord which is set for a little later release.

American Honda Motor Co.’s CEO, Tetsuo Iwamura, predicts that 70 percent of 2012 total sales will consist of 2013 models. Iwamura believes that Honda’s big three (the Civic, Accord and CR-V) will also dominate the market.

Honda aims to be the leader in Fuel Economy

As a popular Honda dealer in Central Texas, we are excited about the strong initiatives Honda is undertaking. With the recent statement made by Honda Motor Company’s CEO, Takanobu Ito, it is no longer a surprise that Honda is going after fuel efficiency supremacy. Ito stated that Honda will consist of, “the No. 1 fuel economy in each [vehicle] category within the next three years.”

Some may call this a bold statement, but Ito just unveiled to the public several redesigned four & six-cylinder engines as well as a new family of CVT transmissions. Needless to say Honda is on their way to back up the claim.

Consumers can expect these efficient engines to be infused in Honda vehicles starting at some point next year. All of the new efficiency technology is expected to be released by the end of 2013, making this efficiency push a pretty big overhaul.

One of Honda’s Chief Engineers inside Research & Development, Keiji Ohtsu, stated that, “some vehicles now on the market could receive the new engines mid-cycle, before the vehicles receive full redesigns.” This doesn’t mean that all Honda vehicles will get an efficiency boost mid-cycle, as some will just go into their redesign grinding out with their standard engine saving Honda some bucks at the end of the day.

According to an article on Yahoo News, Toyota is considering a recall of certain models of the Toyota Corolla after consumers posted many complaints about power steering problems. Killeen Toyota owner may be affected by this pending recall.

The news continues to get worse for this troubled car maker. The question to be seen is if these mounting problems will hurt the brand long term.

According to a survey of car dealers, many dealers feel that Toyota will bounce back from their recall woes. Many said that they would not count Toyota out and that the brand loyalty among Toyota owners was very strong.

Despite pressure from some lawmakers, President Akio Toyoda said he won’t be attending the U.S. congressional hearing on the automaker’s quality lapses, entrusting the job to U.S.-based executives, though would consider an appearance if the committee requests it. He said he wanted to focus on improving quality worldwide.

“I trust that our officials in the U.S. will amply answer the questions,” Toyoda said Wednesday in his third news conference in two weeks. “We are sending the best people to the hearing, and I hope to back up the efforts from headquarters.”

He said Yoshi Inaba, who heads Toyota Motor Corp.’s North American unit, was more familiar with the U.S. situation and was the best executive to deal with the hearing. Toyoda said he was still making plans to go to the U.S. and dates have yet to be set.
